(The following letter was written to Governor Gibbons by a
young student.
Her mother gave permission for it to be printed here, however we
are
only going to use her first initial and not her full name.)
Governor Gibbons: I am 13 years old, in 8th grade,
and I go to Johnson Junior High School in Las Vegas. I don't really understand why you are cutting the school's budgets when
we don't even have enough books for everyone in the classrooms. Also, our computers are very outdated, and in science, we
use swimming goggles instead of safety ones. I heard that you found another forty million dollars in revenue, and I was thinking
that you could put it toward the schools. I remember when you were running for governor, you said that education was important
to you, but you're not really showing that by cutting education's budget.
I am getting ready to
go to high school and I am wondering whether the school will be able to hire highly qualified teachers. Bonanza High School
wants to go to a block schedule, but there hasn't been enough money in the budget for the past several years. Now it doesn't
look like it will happen this year either. Why does my education have to suffer?
L.
